Any Ideas?

The first meeting for the diversity committee will be September 10th and I have a slew of ideas for what PRSSA can do to help UGA as well as Grady in recruiting diversity, BUT as a blogger...I want to know other ideas.

If you have any ideas, please do not hesitate to comment or contact me.

This blog is dedicated to increasing diversity...but I need people to help!

It is not about MY ideas...its about a collaborative effort to make the diversity happen.

I am passionate about this topic...yes! I know that, but at the same time... I want this initiative to be a community effort. I want others to be invested in this cause. I know diversity does not happen over night--It happens when people are open to change and are willing to bring their ideas to the table.

So again, if you have a comment on what we can do, please post it! Or email me at debbielobo@gmail.com . I love getting feedback.

Some cliched saying once said that "One person can change the world." ..IMAGINE what more that one person can achieve?

What a fascinating blog - thanks for stopping by at Greenbanana and commenting as that's enabled me to find you.

I was just pondering a blog post for PR Conversations that will pick up on some of your points re diversity - so I'll be sure to link back to you.

In respect of making changes, one of my favourite quotes is attributed to US anthropologist Mararet Mead who said: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only think that ever has.”

Thanks heather. I appreciate your encouragement. I will definitely look at your blog continuously through out my college career and beyond.

For me, diversity in PR means - men, LGBTQ, racial minorities, international students. It seems like you are already doing a great job with some of these stakeholders. Also think about what kind of PR jobs are represented within PRSSA. In my Chapter, most of our programming was centered around big agencies even though when we surveyed members, we discovered many of them wanted to work in other areas such as nonprofit and government PR. Diversity, as you know, is about more than skin color.

In terms of a more specific suggestion, it would be really cool to see a panel or other event on an issue around PR and gender. At PRSSA National Conference 2006, we had a brief discussion during a diversity panel on how men get paid better and land more management positions in PR than women even though there are lots more women in PR. I think a discussion on PR's relationship to sexual orientation would be interesting as well, as I've never seen any formal discussion on it though my colleagues often talk about how a fair amount of men in public relations are gay.
